STEM Support FAQ
How does STEM Support incorporate the Biblical worldview?
Rather than providing a set of steps or “tricks” for memorizing scientific facts and mathematical mechanics, the STEM Support program first emphasizes a proper (biblical) understanding of what STEM is. It then works from this understanding to key STEM concepts and processes, equipping learners to properly view and utilize this tremendous aspect of creation.
Practically speaking, learner questions most naturally proceed from difficulty understanding a certain concept or solving a particular problem. Each response, however, connects to the reality of what STEM is and how it proceeds from the doctrines of God, man, and nature. The result is that learners better understand both how and why STEM works, which fosters further curiosity and genuine growth in exegeting natural revelation.
Is this program for college or high school learners?
Both! STEM Support is a great program for any learner looking for assistance with a pre-collegiate STEM course.
I am a college learner, and I think I might need to brush up on some pre-collegiate STEM courses before taking a college-level course. Where do I start?
An Agathon University faculty member will work with you to generate a personalized plan based on your experience and comfort level with the subject in question. If that plan includes some review of pre-collegiate STEM material, we will also work with you to identify the appropriate STEM Support course(s) and several options for what curriculum to bring to them.
I am a high school learner and am looking for STEM tutoring. Is STEM Support a tutoring program?
STEM Support is very similar to a tutoring program. Perhaps it could be called a “next gen” tutoring program. While traditional tutoring is 100% synchronous and therefore severely time-constrained, STEM Support takes advantage of technological opportunities to allow for unlimited asynchronous interactions while enrolled in the course while also providing an option to purchase additional synchronous meeting time as desired.
Does STEM Support work for home-schooled high school learners?
Absolutely! STEM Support works with whatever curriculum you bring to it from whatever administrative context you are in, whether that be home school, private school, public school, or something else.
What courses are supported?
Pretty much any STEM course that is typically taught at the secondary level of education (7th-12th grade) is supported, including advanced-level courses (such as Advanced Placement).
How do I send in an asynchronous question?
STEM Support uses Microsoft Teams (the same learning management system used by Agathon University). Learners enrolled in a STEM Support course will have access to organized chat threads where questions can be posted in text and/or video (step-by-step instructions will be provided in the course).
What can I expect from an asynchronous response?
Your Agathon University faculty mentor will respond to your question in a personalized and timely manner (maximum of 24 hours, typically much quicker). The response will engage you wherever you need help and may begin with some clarifying questions to help you further think critically through the concepts you are learning. Video responses will be used frequently as needed and stored in the FAQ library when potentially helpful for other learners.
How does synchronous support work?
Synchronous support consists of virtual, real-time meetings (via Microsoft Teams) with your Agathon University faculty mentor. These meetings can be scheduled in 30-minute increments through your mentor’s Calendly link provided on the course home page. Similar to the asynchronous support (only real-time), your mentor will engage you wherever you need help and may begin with some clarifying questions to help you further think critically through the concepts you are learning.
What will my access point look like?
STEM Support courses will be hosted on the same Microsoft Teams learning management system (LMS) that hosts Agathon University courses. All STEM Support services and interactions will be available from your course within the Teams LMS. For some example visuals, please see these images: STEM Support Preview
